Day 5 - Should’ve Never Let You Go (Neil And Dara Sedaka)
Sixties and seventies crooner Neil Sedaka made my list last year with his groovy classic, Laughter In The Rain, but that was never the song I loved best. Today, I present the song he sung with his teenaged daughter that, at the time, to me, was probably the most romantic and sad song I’d ever heard. As I listen to it now for some inspiration on how to describe it, I hear how dated it sounds, but then, as music always does, it transports me back to the start of my defining era, when I was desperate to understand what love was, desperate to experience it for myself. This may well be the first time I was captured by the joy of a duet, and why the blending of two voices was such a magical listening experience. Neil’s classic alto lullaby against daughter Dara’s lilting sincerity is just sublime. At 2 minutes 6 seconds in, I could die:
