This song brings me to a new era in my life, when I lived in Aurora’s basement apartment, where I found work in Rockville Centre, and where my life would change forever. Such a short period of time made such a huge impact on my world with new experiences, in which lifelong friends were introduced. I can call you all out, but you know who you are. And every single time I hear Something About You, I remember us all sitting in the basement at the Pennysaver, lovingly bickering over accounts, breathing in second hand smoke like it was our job, laughing with Marilyn as she’d explain to potential customers how she reads it on the toilet. Why some periods of our lives are stand-outs, or are still completely vivid in memory is beyond me, but I swear if I close my eyes I can picture us all there, the wood-paneled walls and the smell of the typesetting room, Marilyn Ditizio’s sing-songy voice reminding us that deadline was looming, the hand-drawn oak tag posters pushing goals ('no sandbagging!') and Susan’s tales of how she drove there every day from Nyack.
