Day 17 - What If (Kate Winslet)
Did you ever come across something so random and amazing that you wonder how no one else knows about it? Imagine the spin of my head when I first heard this beautiful, regret-filled ballad, by Oscar winning actor Kate Winslet? It was backward discovery: the song caught my attention as background on one of those Music Choice channels that people put on at parties or whatever. What a pretty but melancholy song, I thought to myself; I wonder who this is singing? I looked at the TV and saw her name. Then I saw that it is the only single released from an animated motion picture for which she provided a voice. Christmas Carol: The Movie. I never even knew of that movie’s existence. If you know me, you know that I ADORE Kate Winslet. I have loved her in every single film I’ve ever seen her in, including those that don’t show her in glamorous gowns. So to have the knowledge that she also sings beautifully was a boon. Once this song became part of my life, I began creating a playlist of ballads by women (including contemporary ballad, I Wanna Be With You, by Mandy Moore, which almost made this year’s list but got bumped for Kate) and even burned it onto a CD for my car. I played that CD to death, always going back to this beautiful moment by Kate Winslet, sometimes equating my own What If’s into the scenario (I know, shocking) I hope you enjoy this song, and perhaps, because of me, you are also discovering it for the very first time.
