Day 44 - Then Came You (Dionne Warwick And The Spinners)
This is one of those mid-seventies pop ballads that always makes me happy, and who doesn’t love a good, old-fashioned duet? Even if said duet is by one woman and five men? Before she was an infomercial queen, Dionne Warwick was the voice of sixties songwriting icon Burt Bacharach, and her voice was peerless and unique. Her sound was more than pleasant enough to the throngs who might still have had an issue with black artists crossing over onto A.M. Radio. When she teamed with Motown superstars the Spinners, they gave way for this upbeat love song, Then Came You, which topped the charts in 1974, was nominated for a Grammy, and still holds up to this day. It has all the R and B appeal for which the Spinners were known, combined with the songbird soprano of Warwick.
