How A.B.B.A. never made it into my countdown last year is beyond me. My entry regarding disco mega-hit, We Are Family ,by Sister Sledge talked about that K-Tel record album that started it all for me. The one with all the hits of the day. One of those hits, among the sea of disco gems, was Dancing Queen. This song is so cheesy and so amazing, from the opening piano drag, to the very end, that has those Swedish voices just floating away into a disco netherverse. A.B.B.A.’s sound in general was so uniquely seventies, but so brilliant for that decade, and even though it doesn’t really hold up, it seems that many have held onto the magic. From Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, to Muriel’s Wedding, to a tribute album by Erasure, A.B.B.A. is a force to be celebrated. Needless to say, Vinny and I LOVED Dancing Queen, and all the gay-related jokes we’d make about each other and about it. You know when you hear it, you also turn it up. There’s no point in denying it.
